Posicor was created by Roach Pharmaceutical Company. It was designed for people suffering from hypertension or high blood pressure and chronic angina problems. Posicor worked because it blocked movement of calcium into the heart cells and blood vessels. This would allow the blood vessels to relax which would increase the flow of blood to the heart. By increasing the flow of blood to the heart, the stress on the heart was reduced. Posicor had some very positive effects on reducing people's hypertension. However, there were negatives. Posicor had some disastrous and dangerous side effects. Posicor was found to risky when it was combined with other medications. It is linked with 123 deaths and was pulled from the market after only 12 months of use. The purpose of this article is to inform you of the changes of Posicor and help advise you on your options should you have suffered needlessly from this drug.
What were the dangers of Posicor?
Posicor was found to be very dangerous when combined with over 25 different drugs. The symptoms produced were dangerously low heart rates. Other medications stayed in the system to long creating their own side effects.
Are the drugs companies liable for damage caused by Posicor?
Yes to a point. The pharmaceutical companies did withdraw the drug when problems arose. However, Posicor was on the market for nearly a year before being withdrawn and was prescribed to over 200,000 people. Over 100 deaths were linked to Posicor so the company does have to take some responsibility.
What are my rights regarding drugs like Posicor?
You have the right to expect that the drugs companies are testing medications to be sure they are safe. Now, there is no known drug that is safe for every single person. There are also medications allowed on the market that will be dangerous to people suffering from certian conditions. In these cases you have the right to expect that adequate warning labels be places on the packaging. The fact that Posicor was later discovered to react so badly with other medications is possibly an indicator that the company did not do enough testing.
