Paper Shredder Injuries

With the increase in inccidents of identity theft and more and more of us working from home, the home paper shredder has become as common a household product as an oven or a dishwasher. For adults these are largely safe but a large number of paper shredder injuries have happened to children. These are usually quite serious and quite often involve amputation of part of a finger. There was one extreme case of paper shredder injury where a young girl lost two fingers.

There are some problems with the design of paper shredders that make them particularly dangerous to children. The consumer product safety commission conducted a variety for tests on several models of home paper shredders and found that nearly all of them, the design allowed children's fingers to come in direct contact with the blades. Many of the ones tested did not have an on/off switch or were equipped with a release system, making it very difficult to retrieve part of a finger caught inside.

To avoid paper shredder injuries you should never allow your children to operate them even while under adult supervision. They are deigned for adult use and adult use only. Another safety tip is to leave it unplugged while it is not in use. Due to the amount of paper shredder injuries inflicted on children, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has called for the redesigning of the product. They are requesting some of the safety features mentioned previously be put in to avoid paper shredder injuries.
