Hip replacement surgery has become more and more prevalent in the United States in recent years as the population has aged collectively and as the process of obtaining and recovering from a hip replacement procedure has become easier. This development is seen as a savior by many who had struggled for years with chronic hip pain that began to take hold of patients for a variety of reasons, and research and development in this area of medical expertise has continued to move forward at a fast pace.
Unfortunately, every advancement comes with a degree of risk, and that’s turning out to be the case with a product that’s distributed by Zimmer Holdings, one of the leaders in providing doctors and ultimately patients with hip replacement components. Due to severe complications experienced by too many patients, Zimmer has recently announced the recall of all Durom Cup hip replacement components from the market in the United States.
If you or someone you love has been injured as a result of depending on and trusting this product, you need to contact a defective medical device attorney as soon as possible to schedule an initial consultation. You may have legal rights that need to be pursued, but you can only make that decision responsibly if you have a foundation of facts from which to work. In the meantime, below is a brief overview of this issue.
The product in question is the Durom Cup hip replacement component, and it’s owned and distributed by Zimmer holdings. The product was originally released in Europe in 2003, and early response to its use was generally positive. As a result, Zimmer sought to release the product into the market stream in the United States, and ultimately gained the approval to do so from the FDA in 2006.
Zimmer Holdings recalled the product, and it’s believed that approximately 13,000 had been used in the United States prior to the recall. If you or someone you love is one of these people, contact a Zimmer Hip replacement lawyer today to schedule an initial consultation.
Initially, the Durom Cup was used successfully on patients in the United States, but by the time 2007 arrived, several doctors began to notice problems in patients who had this device implanted. Generally, there were different sorts of malfunctions that arose, but the bottom line was that the patients who suffered from these side effects had much in common.
The patients affected suffered from the same, and sometimes more intense chronic pain in their hips, and doctors soon realized that there was only one sure-fire way to correct this issue – another hip replacement procedure. While this may not seem altogether serious, hip replacement procedures are not only painful, but costly, as the average cost for such a surgery is generally estimated to cost between $30,000 and $40,000.
Ultimately, one prominent doctor above all others led the charge towards awareness of the problems with this device, and his name is Dr. Lawrence Dorr, who practices in Los Angeles. He has handled thousands of these procedures during his career, and he spoke out publicly warning of the dangers of the Durom Cup.
