The world of bodybuilding and fitness has always been susceptible to dangerous drugs. Certainly, whenever appearance and performance commingle, the temptation to use athletic enhancing drugs occurs. This is what happened with Metabolife 356.

A diet drug, Metabolife 356 suppresses appetite and is said to boost energy levels; thus, it was marketed heavily to persons looking to lose weight and/or spend more time at the gym. In 2002, Metabolife paid over $4 billion in a juried decision to four individuals who had taken Metabolife 356 and suffered heart attacks or strokes as a result of using the drug. Though the Metabolife company steadfastly stands behind their diet pills that contain ephedra, the public is becoming less and less enchanted by the products.

Because Metabolife 356 and other Metabolife products containing ephedra have such dangerous or fatal side effects, they have been banned by athletic leadership organizations such as the NCAA and International Olympic Committee. Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has started an investigation into whether Metabolife lied about the safety of Metabolife 356 and its other similar ephedra-related appetite suppressant products.

With all this data, it may surprise many to learn that Metabolife 356 is still being taken by persons who want a "magic pill" to enhance their metabolism, thereby giving them more energy and allowing their bodies to burn off more calories (in theory, anyway.) This means more class action lawsuits are likely against Metabolife.
