Anti-Coagulant Injection Products Linked to Side Effects and Recalled
When people undergo treatments that include dialysis or need IV’s for fluids or other types of treatments, many need help with the prevention of the natural clotting or coagulation process that the body undertakes when any sort of incision or wound develops. Over the years, many different strategies and products have been developed to safely prevent this clotting, but recent news has revealed that a few of these products are being linked to dangerous side effects.
The issue with these products has come to a head recently in the form of recalls. The information you need appears below, but if you have been injured as a result of any sort of injection of these anti-coagulants, contact an attorney as soon as possible to schedule an initial consultation.
The Products and Manufacturers:
There are a few different product lines involved with these recalls, but there are two companies at the center of this controversy – the Baxter Corporation and AM2 PAT, Inc. Baxter handles the multiple-dose injection products of Heparin and AM2 PAT, Inc. distributes the pre-filled flushes at issue here.
Specifically, the products being recalled are Heparin and Normal Saline pre-filled flushes. These products are generally known by two brand names, Sierra Pre-Filled Inc and B. Braun. Baxter’s multiple-dose injections of Heparin have had lots pulled from shelves as well.
These recalls are being initiated because of the tendency for bacterial infections to form in some patients and other immediate and serious side effects manifesting themselves quickly after other injections. Bacterial infections are particularly dangerous to those patients who use these anti-coagulants during kidney dialysis, which is a common practice.
Symptoms of these side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, diarrhea, headaches and other maladies. Reports have shown that the development of these side effects is almost instantaneous, but the FDA, in its report on the recalls, stated that this does not rule out the possibility that serious symptoms could develop after a longer period of time.
If you have had any sort of injections, IV’s or dialysis done that required the use of a Heparin anti-coagulant injection and you’ve suffered the consequences of these side effects, you need to seek immediate medical help, as you could be in danger if these issues are not treated. You should also contact an attorney as soon as possible to schedule an initial consultation.
