Enbrel Black Box Warning

Enbrel is manufactured by Immunex Corporation and marketed in the US by Amgen and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

Enbrel is a drug that is used to treat many types of autoimmune diseases, also used for children with arthritis. It works by interfering with the TNF receptor and acts as a TNF inhibitor.

Immunex Corporation has stated on their website “Serious infections have happened in patients taking ENBREL. These infections include tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria that have spread throughout the body. Some patients have died from these infections. Your doctor should test you for TB before you take ENBREL and monitor you closely for TB while on ENBREL.”

Enbrel Black Box Warning for Increased Risk of Cancer.

The FDA has published information on the FDA.gov site and states the following:

FDA has asked the makers of the TNF blockers approved for use in children (Remicade, Enbrel, and Humira) to provide information about all cases of cancer reported in children taking TNF blockers. The maker of Cimzia is required to conduct a study to assess long-term risks of the product, including lymphoma and other cancers. This study will begin in 2009 and take about 10 years to complete. FDA has contacted medical experts to assess the potential association between TNF blockers and cancers, including lymphoma, and to determine if there are children and young adults with JIA and Crohn’s disease who may be at particular risk for developing a lymphoma or other cancer.

The FDA has also noted that there is an increase the risk of cancer after the drugs were used for longer than two and a half years.

my grandfather died recently from cancer that started in his tonsils and developed into lymphoma. he was a very healthy person. went threw chemo but died from phemonia. from what i am reading it is very probable that this drug was the cause

I was on Enbrel for 8 years for Psoriatic Arthritis. In Jan of 2010 I was diagnosed with lung cancer. They removed one half of my right lung on April 22nd. There is no history of cancer in my family at all unless you count my mother getting breast cancer at 89 years old. When I asked my doctor about going back on Enbrel today, she said no because it might cause the cancer to come back. ?? I am 71 years old on this very day and have a lot of living to do yet.

I developed throat cancer after taking Enbrel. I have Psoriasis and in 2005 I developed cancer after my doctor prescribed Enbrel for treatment. After nearly two years of surgeries and hospitalizations I have been left disfigured and disabled for the rest of my life. At the time I had no family histories of cancer and had been perfectly healthy all my life.

Had taken Enbrel for over 10 years. In September 2008 I had congestive heart failure. In February 2009 I had a brain tumor removed which ended up being lymphomia cancer.

I used Embrel for 3-4 years before being diagnosed with Non-Hodgen Lymphoma and for the last 4 1/2 years being treated and recently it has progressed after being in remission for only one year. I took Remicade, Enbrel, and Humria consecutively for four years. I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkinâ??s Lymphoma and given six months to live. I have had a Stem Cell Transplant and my family and I are still living a nightmare over these drugs. Is there anything we can do to recover the loses encountered over what these drugs did to me?

Diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma, Follicular Variant, and 5 lymph nodes were also cancer. Everything was removed, but I am still facing radiation iodine treatment which can increase my risk of other cancers. Treated for sepsis infection as well. My doctor claims Enbrel,which I have been on for 10 years, had nothing to do with it and I should continue to use it. I am afraid to.

My brother took Enbrel for 3 years for the treatment of Psoriasis. He went to the ER to find he has kidney stones, and from the CAT scan that was taken, a growth on his lower spine was detected. He does not have health insurance and does not plan on getting tested anytime soon, due to financial aspect of it. Do you know of research projects that might test it for free?
